I can’t remember the last time we had a true blockbuster summer. I mean, last
year we got "The Matrix" early on. It blows everyone away and then
is left with no other movie to pass the baton to. And while "The
Matrix" is able to hold the fort all summer long, it is that
good, there’s been nothing like it this year.
Even the Bruckheimer
blockbusters that are consistently entertaining - glossy, slick, choreographed,
orchestrated and for lack of a better term, well produced - are just
an arm’s length away, on the good side, from the fence of mediocrity.
Case in point, "Gone
in Sixty Seconds" and "Coyote
Ugly". Don’t get me wrong, I loved "Coyote Ugly" as much
as the next guy, and maybe for the same reason,
but somehow I get the sense it's really because of the lack of competition.
What the hell happened to Mission Impossible 2?
And then comes a film, at the end of our summer, to rescue us from our malaise.
"Bring It On" is not a blockbuster
movie, but it is so entertaining, so campy and such a departure in tone from the
rash of "Clueless" clones, so well directed and acted and shot, so funny…
This is not your typical high school movie. Kirsten
Dunst is perfect. "Bring It On" is excellent. Go see it. Feel good.
It is the best movie of the summer.
