"Destination Mir" destined to become a disaster
You've all no doubt heard about the new show that Mark Burnett, creator of
"Survivor", sold to NBC for $35 million (some reports up that to $40
million). "Destination Mir", a show where American contestants compete
to get sent to Space
Station Mir, sounds like a disaster, an idiotic premise - is it really
worth that much money? With "Survivor"
frenzy at its peak, it would seem like someone's got to have a better
idea than this.
In Slate today, Robert Wright gives his
view of "Destination Mir" and says what everyone already knows
about the next round of "Survivor", set in the Australian Outback:
that the game will be tainted by the contestants' knowledge of the first
round and what it takes to win.
Too bad the tryouts for "Survivor
II" are already over, otherwise I'd suggest they pick their contestants
like a jury, from people who had never heard of the first "Survivor".
Only 40 million people watched the finale. That leaves well over 200 million
Americans unaccounted for, right?
