That's actually one of the ways I learned to program
Back in Junior High school and High School me, Greg Marquez, Ron Nakada and John Alvarado used to hack games in much the same way. We never went to that extent but we did change all the graphics and messages and in the process learned alot about computers and programming and how some things were done.
Also, I'm playing the new Zelda on Gameboy Advanced. It's generally more of the same but I still like it though it's slow going in Japanese. Some of the ideas from the N64 game have made it here like the little plots of soil where you plant seeds in the past and they grow up to plants that help you in the future.
