Needed: a new age of enlightenment

I'm currently chewing on this article which gives some background history of the Middle East starting with the Crusades. The author's "answer" involves changing the entire social and political structure of the region -- an "Enlightenment" of the Middle East. I don't yet see how this can be done (the author offers no plan of action) and I'm still wondering what the reaction will be to the West exerting influence to acheive this goal. (Or is he suggesting it will come about naturally?) While it's not religion that the West will be trying to change, could this be viewed as a new kind of Crusade?

Political stability vs. Economic prosperity vs. Religion

Politic is a mean of providing a system of order to ensure economic prosperity, and economic prosperity provides the security a society needs to move toward spiritual growth, or religion.

This is by no means a linear progression, when economy fails, there will be political instability, and when there is political instability, we seek answers through the interpretation of religion. Likewise, if there's a religious faction, there will be political chaos, and with that, the inevitable economic melt down. These three fundamental social blocks have to remain stable in order for humanity to maintain peace and harmony.

From the earliest of times we hunt in groups, that is politics. We do so so we can hunt our prey more efficiently, therefore achieving economic stability. Then when there is a drought and we have nothing to hunt, we paint exorcist figures on walls and we thus create religion.

Human beings haven't evolved all that far afterall. Our purpose lies beyond the point where we've figured all this stuff out.
