Compaq iPaq 3630/3650 Review

by theVooner

I can't remember exactly what my first PDA was. I think it was a Sharp. It was big, bulky, and slow. The worst thing was that it did not connect to a PC so you couldn't backup the info in the PDA. In truth, I can't even remember the number of times I've had to re-type all of my data. After several others, the Palm Pilot finally came along. It was great; the first Palm was simple, easy to use, and it hooked up to a PC with ease. What a fantastic little toy. I scoured the Internet for apps; entered every contact I could think of. Things were great. I went from a Palm 1000 to a Palm Professional, and eventually to a Palm III.

ipaqfull.jpgThen, I did a crazy thing -- I fell for the marketing ploy of a Philips Nino. In hindsight, it was a piece of junk. The Nino was slow, big, and Windows CE at that time really stunk. Worst of all, I couldn't get the Palm to transfer the data to Outlook (and Windows CE) so I had to re-enter all my information. Eventually, I gave up, and bought a Palm Vx. I've had the Palm for nearly 2 years. I was waiting for Palm to introduce its much awaited color screen. Unfortunately, they packaged it in a Palm III body, which in my opinion was a travesty. Then, Sony introduced its PDA, and the Handspring was gaining momentum. Windows CE 3.0, also known as Pocket PC, also had some neat products, including the Casiopeia and the Jornada. But by far, the new Compaq iPaq was the sexiest.

The reason for my upgrade is manifold, but the most important change was the color screen. I just wanted color, plain and simple. I have never been a fan of convergent devices, they just don't work that well. So an MP3 player should be an MP3 player, and a PDA, should be a PDA. That the iPaq can play MP3 files is a bonus, but not my main buying point. In fact, I don't think it's a function that I will use very much. I've only had the iPaq now for 2 weeks, but it's been a really smooth transition.

Form

ipaqbuttons.jpgThe first thing that drew me to the iPaq was the way it looked. It's small, thin, and well made for a PDA. It lacked the bulk of the Casiopeia and the Palm IIIc, and the ugliness that is the Jornada. The shiny metal surface is really sleek. But it's also really smooth which means it can be slippery. That's where the "sleeve" comes in. Compaq includes this sleeve, which for all purposes is purely cosmetic. I like the look more though when it is in the sleeve. It also feels sturdier and somehow even feels better protected with the sleeve on. I usually leave it in the sleeve though I don't show it in these pictures. The iPaq is sort of like the Palm Vx in terms of size and feel. Although it's a bit bigger overall, it's still small enough that I like it. The iPaq has the same sort of 4-button configuration as the Palm, but it also has a neat joypad like speaker. It takes some getting used to, but it's quite handy.

Then you get to the screen. I've read all these review saying its only thousands of colors instead of millions -- hey, who cares, it looks great. Pictures, games, everything, are presented in a clear, precise, oh-so-pretty, COLOR! That's all I care about.

Function

So how would it hold up against other PDAs? As PDA functions go, I think the Pocket PC software and Palm are getting pretty close. Although I found the Pocket PC somewhat more restrictive, it's a great improvement over the past Windows CE version. I had an easy task of transferring my old contact info from the Palm Desktop software to Windows Outlook. I know there is lots of Palm software out there, but I don't miss any of it. In fact, when I downloaded this golf game for the Pocket PC, I was blown away. Color, sound, and great graphics -- I can't get enough.

ipaqhand.jpgThe Windows Media Player serves its purpose, cranking out MP3 tunes at will. One thing that did annoy me though was when I installed the upgrade of the Windows Media Player. The software didn't replace the old one on the iPaq so now I have two Windows Media versions on the PDA. I can't seem to delete the old one. I'm still learning. It plays songs fine, but with 32MB of built-in memory, you are fairly limited to a few songs. Playback is ok through its built-in speaker, but it sounds best with earphones attached.

There are also lots of other programs like a picture viewer, book reader, video player, etc. Neat little programs, though they are more fun than actually useful. It depends what purpose you have for a PDA. For me, it's a heavy-duty filofax (contact info, little notes, calendar, etc.), and the rest is purely bonus. In this case, the bonus functions are just awesome. I like everything so far, and I have to admit, there are still a few things I haven't tried.

Connectivity to a PC was simple. I installed the software, hooked up the USB cable (which I had to buy separately because in Asia, only the serial cable is included) and the device was ready to go.

ipaqcloseup.jpgLet me make a brief comment on the optional "sleeves" (as opposed to the included cosmetic sleeve). Unlike some of the other Pocket PCs, the iPaq makes you buy a sleeve to attach things like compact flash. The sleeves though are huge and fat. They make the device so ugly. I tried it on in the store but I just didn't want the bulk. Besides, the only purpose would be to attach a compact flash for MP3 playback, and I've already got an MP3 player. Besides, the price of a sleeve, isn't exactly cheap especially considering that I paid over US$650 for my iPaq. I didn't want to spend another US$70 on the sleeve, which I'd probably never use. So I didn't get one.

Factor

Well considering I waited nearly a year before I upgraded from my Palm Vx, the burning question is: did I make the right choice? You bet. It was worth the wait. The iPaq is all it promises to be and more. I'm happy with my decision. Whether or not you have a PDA, this new one by Compaq is an ESSENTIAL item and in my opinion, the leading PDA -- for now, anyways.

Why is this better than a casio e-700?

Just curious. I'm thinking of upgrading maybe. Sakuraya is blowing out their E-503 for 29800yen. That's cheaper than you can buy my E-65 for anywhere else. The E-65 is black and white with 16meg. The E-503 is color with 32 meg. The E-700 is the newest casio and they want 59800yen for it. But it's also just color and 32meg though it looks prettier than the E-503.

Casio E-700?

I have played with the E-500 but not the E-700 so I can't give you a really good answer. But I just like the look of the iPaq much better. I'm sure the E-700 has similar functions, but the iPaq is the real winner. I think that would probably be the main reason.

I like the Cassiopeia (BTW, why is it spelled this way not Casiopeia?) because the expansion slot is right there. Whereas the iPaq needs a sleeve. But I don't use it so it doesn't bother me.

I think the Cassiopeia needs a facelift. Even the E-700 looks too much like the square brick. Sounds really expensive too!

handspring visors

I personally own a handspring visor deluxe w/ a backup mod and an 56k Xircom mod. Im getting a free HP jornada next month from the company where i work. So far from what ive played w/ on the jornada (which is basicly the same as the IPAQ, IPAQ is bigger) it seems harder to menuver around. With my Visor. I can get to any single app / file / doc i want to in 4 or less pen swips (i guess u can call it that) W/ the power pc. it can take many many more. plus when u exit a program u must use the task switcher. Also personally I will be getting a sony picturebook late this summer. sony is planning on releasing a newer version of the picturebook w/ a port so u can use any pc monitor w/ it do u can have a biggerscreen. as well as keeping the port for the tv connection. there will be some other improvements too of course. it will proboly be about a 1ghz processor. type unknown. proboly not another crueso processor. yuck. anyway visit my site. its www.kevintm.com its a cool site about stuff. peace.

Still Happy with the iPaq

I'm not going to get into the argument about which is better. Let's just that I have owned both and I like them both. As I stated above WinCE used to suck big-time. Now it's actually really good.

They have a new version of the Sony Picturebook here already with a faster Transmeta. As far as I could see, that was the only main difference. I'm not sure what you are getting at with regards to the monitor "port" because my picturebook comes with both a monitor port AND a TV connection port.

As a follow-up to my iPaq review, let me just say that I still like the iPaq very much. My only complaint thus far is that battery-life is poor. I charge the thing nearly every two days even thought I'm just using the "diary" functions. If I play games/music on it, I pretty much need to charge it everyday. Luckily I brought the charger to work so its not that bad. I just feel like I'm always charging the baby. I left it 'off' one long weekend (3 days) after charging it, and when I turned it on again it said the battery was nearly 1/2 drained! That was a bit strange (or is it?) so there might be something goofy with my battery indicator. Either way, it reminds me of my mobile phone in the past when I had to charge it every night.

As for newer PDA's. Palm may be introducing a new color PDA, but the new Sony N700C (Japanese version) RULZ. (See http://www.sony.co.jp/sd/ProductsPark/Consumer/PEG/PEG-N700C/index.html) I almost bought it the other day when I saw it.

But I didn't because Sony also has a new GSM mobile phone (sorry American GSM-NA it's for our GSM only) that has a Memory Stick slot and can playback ATRAC files. I think that might be more neat, especially since I'm still really happy about my iPaq.

Screw Palms. IPAQ's rule

ok. that message that i wrote up here, i think i was on crack when i wrote that. after i got my jornada. i sold it and got an ipaq, just for the hell of it. after playing around with my ipaq, ive come to realize. all palms suck compared to the ipaq 3635. I love my Ipaq, and everything from the visor easily transfered over to my ipaq. I highly recommend getting a pocket pc over any palm. also, ive realized. sony picturebooks suck. id rather get a toshiba s402 w/ the built in dvd/cdrw. along w/ a gforce2 mobile gfx card. but ill wait for another year. mobile p4's :)

Why wait?

I don't know -- it's too easy to criticize things when you don't have it. You get easily influenced by other factors/opinions. The picturebook is actually really good. There isn't a better full power PC out there that is as small. I love it for trips. As you wrote, it was too easy to rip on the iPaq till you got one. Then you loved it. I bet if you had a picturebook, you'd give it nothing but praise.

I think waiting for the "next" gadget is a waste of time. There is always something better/faster/smaller coming. The Toshiba s402 is nice but I think the new Sony Vaio R505 is better! Still, since I don't have EITHER, I won't pass judgement. Just buy whatever it is NOW.

Just a quick point on the iPaq: the battery life is getting really bad. It happened again -- I didn't turn the machine on for 4 days and now the batter is half drained. This is like my mobile phone, I gotta remember to charge it at least every other day!

Which leads me to an intersting point. When 2.5G (GPRS/1XRTT) comes, those handsets will eat up 4x the battery compared to today's handsets. 3G handsets are supposed to eat up 100x today's battery life! I hope technology can fix this issue before services are launched. I'd hate to be back in the days when mobile phone batteries lasted less than 10 hours ("talk-time" less than 1 hour).
