Do we fictionalize our lives, not embrace the true gravity of things most of the time, so that we can make fictions more real life to ourselves?

I think i'm saying that fiction can often replaces the meaning that is otherwise there in life but is sometimes to big for us to confront directly.

Yes, selective memory would have to be part of it but it's more to do with the fact some people cry more over movies then they do about their own lives.

what do you mean, fictionalize? are you talking about how people remember things they want to remember, or see things they want to see? selective perception, etc?

katherine anne porter said something like fiction is a way of giving meaning to an often meaningless existence.

but then, what's "meaningful"? impacting other people? that happens all the time, consciously or not, so really, life is packed with meaning. argh. what a question!
