The best compliment my father ever gave me was that “you have a mind to comprehend these great works of man” in reference to the St. John’s program books, but also in reference to why the hell would I want to go and make blades for a living?

The new security thinks they’re a bloody panzer division. Sigh. I think of security as a watchdog, they just bark and show up in uniforms with flashlights and other tools hanging off of them similar to spiked dog collars that give them the appearance of dominant authority. It's certainly funny to watch them go when they're all riled up, but you should let sleeping dogs be.

It rained and hailed in a deluge Saturday just before our newly instated tradition of a ‘Homecoming’ football game. It was the powers at be’s way of saying we should have just had S & C.
I only stayed for the pep rally, before the game against CSF. Charity dressed up as our mascot, a large ‘Great Book’ with the school seal, Euclid props and ancient Greek written on the inside cover and ‘Go Books!’ on the back. There were also skinny boys as cheerleaders, our touch football team wore orange St John’s football jerseys, there was a band playing ‘Louie Louie’ out of tune and a paper banner everyone ran through. It was too surreal to me and my hangover so I laid low till the evening ‘Homecoming’ dance.

When we lost paradise apparently we gained a world of farts and strange noises during sex.

What to do when you keep dreaming of being intimately involved with those colleagues you see every day? Is this a moral dilemma?

Went hiking with the dogs and friends down to Tesuque Creek amongst the Aspens that are beginning to turn. The hike was 1/3 down hill and 2/3 up to loop back to the start of the trail. I definitely prefer uphill first as I get to go crashing down the path like an idiot after we turn around. I don’t care how bad it is for my knees, I love it so. The dogs swam around in the creek and Alton went nuts doing his silly bounding looping run in response to the chill water. A wet Dalmatian is a funny sight. There was even a guy with dachshunds on the trail, he was yelling at his dog as much as it was barking. Urg. The polar fleece/nylon shell vest I found at the end of last school year proved to be a worthwhile acquisition as it began to rain just after we got to the creek and continued fairly steadily for the rest of the hike. My torso stayed nicely dry thanks to the vest and luckily everyone made the hike safely and didn’t get too cold. I need to go hiking more often on different paths, not just the school ones. In that respect, I’ve drawn up the things I really much do this school year:
1. Go To Mexico
2. Go To Carlsbad Caverns
3. Go Snowboarding
4. Go to the Jemez Hot springs

All my old friends who are headed somewhere are headed to the East Coast (except for Adela). She and I have headed West. I found poverty, harsh incomparable beauty, constant personal work and challenge, inspiration, drought, dry heat, escape, a slower pace and friendliness.

Is it worth it? You bet your east coast arse.

The rain from yesterday has continued, making it smell all pretty everywhere. Atalya’s top is obscured by gray storm clouds and the rain can’t find a constant pace for itself. We got a nice half hour power black out in Eldorado at the house I’m taking care of last night. Just before we were going to start cooking dinner for our crappy Kung-Fu movie viewing get together too. Natural gas to the rescue!

On wards to about 8 hours of school work...

The first time i went to Taos i wandered in to an art gallery (now closed down and moved out) that had an exhibit of Xaverio's works. The particular series on display was all of heaped ground up gem stones and other materials on disks with back and suround lighting. Each disk represented a planet in our solar system. They simply glowed on their own when the owner turned off the additional lighting. The photos i saw on this site don't do his work justice though.

What is it with French lit? They all try to write the same things like a fad wave: odd sordid sexual exploits, maxims, the seduction of people far too young to be seduced by someone far to old to seduce them, rewriting Greek tragedies, stories about nothing, stories about characters you could care less about. It just becomes useless.

Owww-wow. So last night Jeanne quit her day job. Of course, she got totally smashed in celebration. She was drinking a nice chambord concoction called purple haze 5:1 sake and chambord. We had to put her to bed at 8 though and the rest of us played video games or went and saw the movies playing in the hall. I talked to Steve, he has some truffles! We will be doing some cooking this coming week thanks to the arrangement (being a stuffed fridge) with the people I’m house sitting for. While putting on a pair of leather pants I hadn’t put on since my last birthday I found a note wishing me a ‘happy freaken’ birthday’. Down at the Paramount with Nico the place only got hopping at 1am as usual- and closed at 2. I didn’t see the person I went to see but soon was carried away by various ready distraction. I played a horrible game of pool, danced my silly butt off to Philly’s grooves, and met a male nurse specializing in burns who can remember the gay bar before the Drama Club and when the building the Paramount is in was a mechanical garage- such a sweetie. Quick- how do you tell a Cowboy? They know how to grab the horn! And of course, the usual locals and some new and shiny faces were there (Shiny? It was probably sweat as the place was steamed up). I miss after hours because I actually get to talk to my bartending friends. David was there, though just about to leave, as was Betty. She was sitting with some Johnnies- one I live across from and one who wants to be part of the motorcycle club- yeah! So after being shown someone's very personal poetry Nico and i called it quits. We wound our way back to campus were all had tired itself out. I gave Sam a much needed massage, shot the schit with a Dubliner Johnny and some other fresh-persons and went to beddiebies.

This year’s kick off party

Fun fun fun. Got over the fever (thank you z-pac), stole Sam’s wifebeater, button fly jeans, and suspenders style, and bartended/grooved to Vanilla Pop. They’re a cover band what jives nicely as campy loungesters. I like not having to go to Swig to see them. We had a hard time with the kegs, half of it was foam and what we did get was flat. It’s the worst tap I’ve ever had. Curse you Santa Fe altitude and taps without pressure releases. I met some new people, or at least, people new to me including an ex-Wellesley girl, an ex-marine, an enigmatic artist, a chanteuse who looks like another chanteuse I know, and yes, another Dallasite who was very woeful for me that I attended Ursuline Academy. I think the longer you stay at this college the more you see repeats of personality and faces- in short, we are inundated with doppelgangers. Who the hell though eugenics was a liberal art anyway? L. S-D. showed up out of the blue much to my delight and I convinced her (didn’t take much), Mark, and the chanteuse to regale us with songs. Even Reike joined in before he disappeared with the Dallasite. ‘Walk’ indeed. My voice is strangely but pleasingly rumbly and low right now- undoubtedly the effects of this cold and the cig smoke at the party. Thankfully L. S-D. will be moving back to Santa Fe. More people that make me happy closer to me, and being happy themselves here. All is well and I am at peace again, refreshed. Take a shower and give mum a call.

A song I’d sing to Dubya

Gasoline Serpent- by Devotchka

In the gutter gasoline
Suffocated our self esteem
Desensitize, desensitize me
public hearts anesthetize me
A voice will light our streets
when you are gone.

This town is a garbage pile
if it takes us down
we’ll go out in style
she swears she’s seen god
and we’re all forsaken
had the guitars man
there’s windows breaking.
some blood spilt on our streets
when you are gone.
the blood will cleanse our streets
when you are gone.

Scheming on this thoroughfare
I fled into the ancient scattered air
You tell me he’s been looking this who time down there
just to carry you away from here.

In the gutter gasoline
It shimmers like a serpent queen
And drunken dogs bring angel choirs
Fortune copper, pipes and wires
I worship at their feet when you are gone
I worship at their feet when you are gone.

And we say,
A-ooowwwhh, A-owww-oww- etc.

Apparently the Annapolis transfer who would have had the position looked at her schedule, realized we have a hard junior math curriculum, realized as a lab ass we aren't maids over here in Santa Fe and wussed out.
Anyway, we're going to have to trade scheduals to make it work. I will however, be keeping my super cool seminar, much to my joy.
