I choose the bolder interpretation. The idea was in the air. There is something in the arrangement of the world spirit at this stage in history that leads people to be inclined towards stumbling upon just this word, this particular obfuscatorily self-referential name for a rare and bizarre fear. Individuals throughout the world find themselves alike in being drawn to this one bright little gem, seeing how it shines alike on their thousands of disparate lives. Drawn together by no common thread but this, they find themselves, nonetheless, subtly changed by the occurence. And thus is the world transformed.

How funny to think that such things happen every day!
