My Sincerest Apologies

The Canadian Railroad Trilogy

There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run,
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun.
Long before the white man, and long before the wheel,
When the green dark forests were too silent to be real.

But time has no beginnings and hist’ry has no bounds,
As to this verdant country they came from all around.
They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall,
Built the mines, the mills, and the factories for the good of us all.

And when the young man’s fancies were turnin’ in the spring,
And the railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring.
Their minds were overflowing with the visions of the day,
And many a young man won and lost and many a debt to pay.

For they looked in the future and what did they see?
They saw iron road running from the sea to the sea.
Bringin’ the goods to a young growin’ land,
All up through the seaports and into their hands.

Look away said they across this mighty land,
From the western shore to the western strand.
Bring in the workers and bring up the rails,
Open ‘er heart let the lifeblood flow.
Gotta get on our way ‘cause we’re movin’ too slow.

Bring in the workers and bring up the rails,
We’re gonna lay down the tracks and tear up the trails.
Open ‘er heart and let the lifeblood flow,
Gotta get on our way ‘cause we’re movin’ too slow.
Get on our way ‘cause we’re movin’ too slow.

Behind the blue Rockies the sun is declinin’,
The stars, they come stealin' at the close of the day.
Across the wide prairies our loved ones lie sleeping,
Beyond the dark forest in a place far away.

We are the navvies who work upon the railway,
Swingin’ our hammers in the bright blazin’ sun.
Livin’ on stew and drinkin’ bad whiskey,
Bendin’ our old backs until the long days are done.

We are the navvies who work upon the railway,
Swingin’ our hammers in the bright blazin’ sun.
Layin’ down track and buildin’ the bridges,
Bendin’ our old backs until the railroad is done.

So over the mountains and over the plains,
Into the muskeg and into the rain.
Up the St. Lawrence all the way to Gaspé,
Swingin’ our hammers and drawin’ our pay.
Drivin’ ‘em in and tyin’ ‘em down,
Away to the bunkhouse and into the town.
A dollar a day and a place for my head,
A drink to the livin’ and a toast to the dead.

Oh the song of the future has been sung,
All the battles have been won.
O’er the mountain tops we stand,
All the world at our command.
We have opened up the soil,
With our teardrops and our toil.

For there was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run,
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun.
Long before the white man and long before the wheel,
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real.
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real,
And many the dead men too silent to be real.

Since school let out in June I’ve been horrible to those of you I’ve entitled my friends. To make matter worse I was oblivious to this fact until just yesterday. What happened? I was bugging a friend because she hadn’t called me (she never calls!). After I was done my piece she threw my words back in my face, and sadly, had reason to do so. “I haven’t had time,” I explained. But wait, hold up! The response I had just given her is the same one I always receive, so I started to think... Our conversation normally goes like this –
“You didn’t call me!”
“I haven’t had time, sorry.”
“Me neither, but you’re my bestest so I made time.”
“Sorry hun, but I couldn’t make time even if I tried.”
“You haven’t tried!”
“Whatever... Hey! Brad was checkin’ me out yesterday! ”
And for your safety I’ll stop there.

Back on track –
So if I’ve preached this to her so many times, what is currently exempting me from my own advice? Nothing. Not a darn thing. I’m simply being the stupid evil bumhole that I normally accuse and preach to.

I don’t know what’s brought on this new behaviour, but I hope it stops. Us gals have a saying – “chicks before dicks”. Now I can’t think up another corny rhyme, but the same ought to go for friends and work (or school). It’s how I try to live, friends first.

Everyone who’s ever tried to tempt me with skipping class knows I’ve never skipped a single one. Sort of. There was that one class in grade nine, Mrs. Zilkey’s English class. I waltzed in that day a whole ten minutes before the bell rang. What?!? is the instinctive response upon hearing this, for two reasons. What was I thinking actually daring to show up that day? I needed to get my assignments and explain why I was absent, saved me from the skip-a-tron. And secondly, what was I doing skipping class in the first place? That’s easy, putting a friend first. That day one of my bestests decided to breakdown five minutes before lunch finished, so the six other friends present all secretly decided to stay and help her get through the situation. When the bell rang three of my friends thought better of their secret plans and went to class. It was then down to three friends to help her through this. I looked around at the four of us, one was bawling, a class missed wouldn’t hurt my straight A’s, but the other two couldn’t afford to miss a class. After fifteen minutes or so when our friend was a little better I sent those two to class (for the first time that week), they had detentions, but they felt better for helping, and actually learned a thing or two. I stayed, because friends come first. Of course upon explaining this to my teacher upon arriving in class ten minutes before the bell, they burst out laughing.

Lately I lost that attitude, but I’m trying to find it again. So please forgive my doings in the past weeks, and know that I AM always here, I just need a kick in the bum every once in a while. Thanks Tarface.

*hugs*

P.S. Sorry about last night, I was a little hyper and nor at all helpful. Didn’t mean to hurt you.

P.S.S. If you’re down – smile!

edit - Oops! I forgot. Blue wants to play The Itsy Bitsy Spider, her clues are a sun, a raindrop, and a spider. Dora visited her grandmother's childhood friend - the chocolate tree. Brother didn't want to ride the rollercoaster, and Sister taught her father that it is the purpose of the occasion that is special, not how big the fish is.

That's the word! *turns off Jesse's mental dictionary* See I ignore those things.

*hugs*

You meant the word *ought* instead of 'aught', because otherwise it would have meant practically the opposite...

Oh, and *bawling* instead of 'balling'.

And finally, it is a defibrillator.

I think Lex has it.

Friends first is a very good idea, for everyone, including myself, though it is less drastically applied to myself than you, ms workaholic... *is bitter* and sometimes the "chicks before dicks" rule should probably be bent. No specific occasions worth discussing come to mind right away, but there have been occasions i'm sure. exceptions to every rule, no matter how important the rule is.

love you, no matter how busy you are

Alex

I think the word you're looking for is defibrillator.

Defibrillator - An electrical device used to counteract fibrillation of the heart muscle and restore normal heartbeat by applying a brief electric shock.

someone want to tell me what refibulator stands for - 'cause I don't think it's a real word...
