Morals and Values, terms lost with the times

Please someone help me understand. Help me to understand how we have come to live in a world where money is everything, where it is the sole thing that matters. When did money become more important than respect, honour, and being plain-old helpful? When did it become so valued? Not a moral, but a value?

When asked to 15 students whether they would accept the job that paid 250000 a year + 2 months vacation, or the job that paid 280000 a year + 2 and a half weeks vacation, the votes were tied. Most of the students asked, well what does that come out to in a /hour wage? They’ll take the higher. Well of course with less vacation you work more and therefore earn more!

The looks shot at the two of us who replied that the things most important to us were helping other, our families, and doing what we enjoy even if it pays less could have killed.

When did the society change to make money a moral accomplishment? And when does it change back?

As long as I'm helping others I wouldn't give a damn where I was. The middle-of-nowhere - I'm here now. But I love it. Put me in the middle of a major city, or on a desert island. Give me a shack, and I'll always invite you over. Give me a manson and feel free to live there. What the heck would anyone do with that much money??? Sure I want to be able to pay the bills, and buy the groceries, it's a financial security. But what would I do with the rest of it? I'd probably still end up blowing it by giving it to those who need it, or helping the world with it. My time and the money I can spare is always for others.

i would rather not be broke... would like enough to be able to pay bills and such... but wouldn't want to work all the time... if i did that i would go insane... i need to be able to have time to help people and do one of my favourite things... scouting... without that i wouldn't be where i am today... oh well... then again i could stand living nowhere and just helping people....

I would rather be insecure, broke, and living on the streets, but helping others, than secure, a workaholic, and having a ton of money and spending it all on myself...That is just personal opinion though....You just have to look for the people that have the morals and the ethics..I could rhyme off a few...I could rhyme off a few that don't, but that is not the point. Focus in on the posistive. Good things never come easy, you have to find good people.

What's an extra 30k a year?

Coming from my background, I could live happily on 30k a year.
I'd pay 30k a year to have a two month vacation.
250k is too much for people.

Funny... everything I am wants to ask you what the hell you're smoking, but I see your point. I just am glad I grew up under the circumstances I did, and got the morals and values thing right.

it changed a long time ago... and will be this way for a long time... you need money nowadays to survive... it is good to be helpful and caring... however to survive in life that is no longer enough... you need the mullah... the more you have the more secure you feel in life... odd isn't it?

*hugs*
