AnimeExpo - Anaheim,California

Founded in 1991, Anime Expo is the primary annual event hosted by The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA). As a vehicle to promote animation and comics and a venue for the fan community, it has the pleasure of being the largest tradeshow in the US of its kind. In 2004, in its 13th year of existence, Anime Expo's attendance topped 25,000 attendees over the course of 4 days. Despite this success, Anime Expo is still predominantly run by fans, who volunteer their time and efforts.

In addition to the annual Anime Expo held on 4th of July weekend, the SPJA has also hosted two other events; Anime Expo New York, which was a satellite convention held in Times Square in the fall of 2002, and AX Tokyo held in early 2004. AX Tokyo was hosted in cooperation with the Japanese Association for Science Fiction International Communication.

Anime Expo has become one of the staples of anime fandom in America. Its success over the past 13 years has encouraged multitudes of other conventions to spring up across the country. Its Exhibit Hall has been host to the largest collection of import and domestic anime and manga merchandise anywhere in America, as well as host to galleries of some of the most influential artists in Japan's recent history. Along with panels, workshops for traditional and contemporary Japanese culture and fandom, Video and Film presentations, Main Events including Live Competitions, Charity Auction, and Concerts, and AniMatsuri: The Anime Summer Festival, Anime Expo has become the convention it is now because of the Industry, Guests, and Fans that love and support it every year.

Appleseed

This has just been released in DVD. A stunning film to look at, it is also amazing that they managed to condense Shirow's awesome manga series down to 90 minutes without losing the impact and overall message of the story. Fully 3-D animated, it still manages to maintain a cel-animated look and feel. It's Great!

Samurai Deeper Kyo

A very well-written and delivered story. Samurai Deeper Kyo focuses around fictional events that took place during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 AD within Japan. During the battle, two samurai clashed swords and, in turn, became bitter enemies: Kyoshiro Mibu and the titular character "Demon Eyes" Kyo. During their showdown, a meteor strikes the battlefield and ends the fight.

Four years pass. A simple medicine man is hunted by a bounty hunter named Yuya Shiina. During their encounter, something far more serious comes into play. They are attacked by a monster and, in the ensuing crisis, the medicine man reveals a deep secret: "Demon Eyes" Kyo's spirit had been locked inside of him. Following Kyo's reappearance, the future of mankind will be changed forever.

Later on, during their travels, the recently cooperative pair of Kyo and Yuya meet other interesting people as they search for Kyo's body, so he can once again become the most powerful warrior in the world.

This series has great visuals and delivers the feel that the show is trying to achieve. There is a moral here, but it quickly unravels as the series continues. Also, most of the voice acting is superb, yet the character of Benitora has some weird transitions between his serious and not-so-serious sides, each having a different tone, which may cause some confusion with viewers. The music gives a good feel to the show, dark at times, cheerful in others, and the battle music definitely keeps you glued to the screen.

The one major flaw I had with this series is the fact that they could have made it a bit longer. Having only 26 episodes and as many characters as they introduce, all with their own pasts and ties to other characters, the show could have easily been 50 episodes, so the series seems a little congested, and moving at too fast a pace at times.

All in all, if you are searching for a series that is somewhat similar to shows like Inuyasha, and Saiyuki, you need to give this show a try.

Samurai Deeper Kyo deserves at least an 8.5 and what else could you expect from the same studio that produced Rurouni Kenshin?

Hellsing

This is one of my favorite anime series! It's actually a morbid tale of two groups of vampire hunters in England. I like those dark stories once in a while... The series has only 13 episodes, but they're all very good.

Princess Mononoke

As unsunghero has mentioned in his comment, Princess Mononoke is also a great work of art by Hayao Miyazaki. His films are adventurous, full of fantasy, with corageous heroes and heroins, and they also show us a bit of the history and culture of Japan, which is, in my oppinion one of the most rich and beautiful of the world.

Chihiro

Today I wanna talk about one of my favorites anime movies: Spirited Away(2002), by Hayao Miyazaki. Great creation, this anime is a brilliant story about a girl trapped in a world of spirits. A fantasy and adventurous movie, that is also beautiful! Created by one of the greatest masters on animated cinema.
