Let's Make a Deal!
Working on an Ad System... I have the easy part working, the display of ads. But I don't have the cool administration stuff/PayPal integration done. So I'll make a deal with anyone who decides to donate to Daypop. For every $4 donated, I'll manually enter your ad into the database for 1000 impressions with a minimum donation of $10 (just following Metafilter and now Pyrads' lead). That's 2500 impressions for $10. Um. I don't know how long this will last. Donate on this page. PayPal should allow you to enter a comment/special instructions. Enter this information: Title: (max 20 chars) URL: Description: (max 50 chars) Important! If you don't enter this information, then I'll assume you're just doing a straight donation expecting nothing in return. If you do enter all this, I'll review it and if I approve the ad, I'll accept payment. If I don't approve the ad, I'll deny payment. That means you get your money back. Please make sure the title is max 20 chars and the description is max 50 chars. If they don't fit, I'll have to deny payment. Also, I'd like to get at least a couple ads before running them, otherwise the impressions will get used up fast. So the starting date is dependent on how many donations come in... And, since there are no administration pages, there's no way to find out the number of impressions delivered and the clickthrough rates. I could make this information public but I don't know if everyone wants that. If you do donate, you'll be an early-adopter Daypop sponsor. Muchas gracias. Cool. Fun.

"Though I am paralysed from the neck down due to a crossing the road accident, I remain committed to bringing laughter to people around the world."
Well, I just donated $20 and will copy the idea myself -- BTW: we::blog is really cool -- how come you don't promote it -- er, rather, how come I didn't know about it before? Good luck! You're a winner! Next pay check, I will donate more! Tithing I guess -- my referrer page is littered with daypop links!
I'd like some feedback about keyword based ads actually. It seems like there'd need to be a critical mass of ads and search requests for that system to work. If a weblog bought, say, the keywords "video games gamecube ps2 xbox", it'd still take forever to serve 2500 impressions since those terms are most likely not searched very often.
I was thinking perhaps a "search relevant" ad placement might be a good idea where if the advertising site is in the Daypop index, its ad would appear if the site appears somewhere (anywhere) in the search results. Like setting a keyword based ad to all the words in your site.
Well, the Plokta News Network would certainly like to be an early adopter. And not just because we've reprinted loads of links from the Daypop Top 40. Honest.
Eventually, if you get enough ads, maybe you should aim to make it targeted to search term (a la Google).
