We have some guests staying with us this week. Our cousin twice-removed, Rae, is here with her friend Bernard for a whirlwind tour of Malaysia and Asia. To be precise, she's my mother's cousin's daughter, and my grandmother's sister's granddaughter. Wotta mouthful.
They migrated to the UK long long ago, and now she works and lives in Paris. She and Bernard arrived from Thailand a few days ago, and they were staying at some hotel in Bukit Bintang until my mother offered to let them stay here. Especially since they're on a tight budget - they're backpackers.
On Sunday, we showed them around Putrajaya. My mother pointed out her new office there and... Oh yeah! I haven't mentioned that, have I? My mother's changed her job. After more than twenty years at UM, she's finally moved on. Now she's working in the Ministry of Higher Education.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Yesterday happened to be Bernard's birthday, so Raena and Yu Ming were dispatched to get a Chestnut Cream Cake from La Manila. And they took particular glee in using those candles that light themselves up over and over again after you've blown them out.
Today, Rae and Bernard hopped on a bus to Pangkor. Then this weekend they're following my parents to Melaka. And there are plans for Redang, Bali and Singapore after that. It's going to be like this for the next few months, until they fly back to France in November.

Okay. Here's a brief update on what's been going on. It's been about one month since I started working at the Telekom building, but it feels like much longer. I got my second paycheque, and registered for my EPF. The security module of the Telekom project is finally over, more or less, so it's been pretty lax lately. But it was a completely different picture a few weeks back.
Towards the end of our two-week deadline, my front-end stuff was still only halfway done. I had frittered away all of my time trying to pick up the new Struts stuff. By then I was panic-stricken, and even the Project Manager - who is usually the embodiment of calmness and serenity - was visibly worried.
And so the boss despatched another senior to give us a hand and dig us out of the hole I had plunged everyone into. We worked feverishly and I did overtime on two Saturdays and a Sunday. Eventually, several weeks after the original due date, completion finally came within our reach. The entire Gantt chart has been pushed forward thanks to yours truly. Luckily, the requirements got slashed at the very last moment, so that bought us some more time to make up for my screw ups.
There was one point where I sensed my senior was getting a bit tired of me. I don't blame him. If I was in his shoes, forced to put up with the constant wailing of a helpless freshie, I would probably lose it. But now that the pressure is off, everyone seems pretty understanding, reassuring me that with my lack of experience, all this was to be expected. So I don't think I'm in too much trouble... I hope.
