Non-registered users' comments (or Anonymous Posts)
I'm in the process of implementing a new permissions type ALL which allows anyone to comment without registering a nickname. This is a lot like other weblog commenting systems out there. While I like the idea of persistent identities and a certain amount of accountability for one's comments, I think allowing posting without registering will lead to more active participation.
The new type of comments entry form will include spaces to enter:
name
email
url
title
comment
There are a couple issues with Anonymous Posts. First of all, should registered nicknames be protected? So that if I try to comment as say Greggman I am required to log in. This opens a whole can of worms...
Related to this, what if I'm already logged in?
Right now, my inclination is to leave Anonymous Posts as a separate type of post from registered ones, in that there is no checking of pre-registered nicknames, that being logged in doesn't matter (you can still type in whatever you want in the name field). This keeps interactions with the system simple and less error prone, less potential for bugs, etc. This system is ready to be tested.
Give me the word and the code gets updated.

I am sooooo late in this conversation....
How about just marking it [guest]? And giving the choice either to register/sign in or remain a guest....
1. Any posing of one person as another only takes place within the message itself, and pretty much everyone would know it wasn't the real person, since it is marked [guest] by the time and date of posting
2. [guest] automatically shouts "anonymous" and sounds better too. More welcoming... ahhhhhh.
3. Those who want to protect their identities, keep signing in when you wanna post with your name and sign out when you want to post as a guest.
4. The only downside of this [guest] business is that people can't choose different monikers for themselves, but I agree most people won't care about that. And if they do, well, sign up.
5. More people will participate if they don't have to register. We all know that. People want to comment right away, at will.
[Guest]. It's for the best.

I changed the code
You can set permissions to all now in both the advanced properties and in your weblog directives. I still need to make examples of how to use it.
Real quick, there a two more variables you can display:
$author_email
$author_url
The $author_nickname is in the form "anon:Dan Chan" so you can differentiate an anonymous post.
Bad news: Once you set permissions to all, members who are logged in will still have to post anonymously.

my preference is anon_greggman vs greggman because [greggman] looks more like a quote for emphisis and also [greggman] requires someone to know that we::blog blogs use that standard where as anon_greggman is most likely clear without explaintion

What about bracketing?
I was thinking names could get bracketed, like so:
[greggman]
or
[Bill Gates]
That way you could tell if it was an anonymous post and that [greggman] may or may not mean greggman.

Posting under any name
I would really prefer of other people could not post as "greggman". Athough I don't think many people would abuse it I also don't think most people would rob my apartment but that doesn't mean I'd leave it unlocked.
Even if it was a friend, posting something under my name as a joke while I might laugh at the joke I'd be upset at the post.
Also, another reason that people that don't register are labeled "anon" generally is it's supposed to be an indication that they were not ready to stickup to their comment since you can't find out who they were.
Just my 2 cents.
