don Quixote - From madness to noble

I think the most appropriate book to start with is "Don Quixote", "Las Aventuras del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha", in original version. Written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in 1604, one of the most well know Spanish writers, the book is a reference in Spanish culture.

Unless you read in Spanish very well, I suggest you to read the version in English, because the Spanish one has a lot of old Spanish words, difficult to read even for a Spaniard.

It tells the story of a noble so fanatic by novels of chivalry that became crazzy and started transferring to the real world all the imagery he read in the books. Imagining himself as a knight errantry, he improvised his equipment and crossed Spain looking for adventures and weak people to protect, always followed by his loyal squirre "Sancho Panza" and his horse "Rocinante". He actually found a lot of adventures, but all of them imagined by his biased mind. In honour of his loved maiden "Dulcinea" (also part of his dream), he dared terrible monsters and villains that in the real world were only part of the common and quite routine of Spanish villages.

Sad, exciting and tender, the story has different interpretations, open to the reader. Was Don Quixote only a poor crazzy man or a noble soul, a simbol of the solidarity latent in the human essence? Or both? In any case, it's interesting to see the Cervantes' critics to the society in the 16th century and the customs of people in that time, richly described in this large but funny book.

Welcome

There are houndreds of books of Spanish writers translated into English. Names like Pablo Neruda, Miguel de Cervantes, Gabriel García Marquez and many others have well known works with magic stories, where the soul of the Latin culture is fully described.

I'm a Spanish speaking guy, so forgive me for my English mistakes. This blog has the only purpose to share our huge literature with the world, and share the experiences of all readers interested in Spanish books. Please feel free to tell us your own experiences and opinions about these books, and suggest some authors/ books for reviewing as well.
