document.write('
I know I haven’t written much on here but I thought I might try to add a few comments on this even if not many people will see it.

With the launch of Windows 7 last week, I was pretty eager to see what new laptops were around given that I have been on the RC Win 7 version for months and I really like it compared to Vista.

I was interested in a new laptop and although I was travelling, I went into an electronic store on Saturday morning to see what was there. I was initially drawn to the screen/power of the Sony Vaio FW/AW series and the HP DV7/DV8. But when I saw a new silver laptop in the display case, I had to see it – the HP Envy 15. Yes the comparisons to the Macbook Pro are going to be made (it’s a darn near copy, isn’t it?), but it was the different features of the brilliant screen, Blu-Ray drive (though its external), and higher end specs (combined with Windows 7) that pushed me over the edge. So I bought it.

Before making the decision, I was looking for a few reviews, if not comments on the computer - enough to help me make up my mind, but there just wasn’t enough information out there. Most reviews/comments were just a written article on the specs and/or a rehash of the press release. So I thought I would make this quick review of the HP Envy 15 which perhaps might help someone else decide if they should get this. I’ll follow my past format:

Form
The Envy 15 is quite stunning to say the least. It’s very well made and is probably the best in its class, thus far for a Windows laptop. Yes, the comparison is going to be made to the Macbook Pro and that’s quite fair (at least you can share quite a few of the “accessories”!). The Envy 15 has a similar-type metallic body though it’s not a “clean” metallic shell but has a dotted pattern around it. At first I thought it looked a bit feminine with the pattern, but it does actually look quite nice and offers a bit of a design rather than a boring shell.

The best part of it is the feel of this metallic body which is both solid and a delight to use versus the usual plastic laptop case. Like all of these bigger laptops, it does tend to heat up and the metallic wrist area does get a bit warm but not hot to the point you can’t use it (and certainly less so than my XPS Studio 16). It’s fairly thin like the Macbook Pro and the keyboard is very nicely spaced with excellent keys.

The trackpad is probably one of the key selling points – like the Macbook Pro, it handles finger strokes like pinching for zooming and rotation. While it does take some practice to get used to it (I can’t seem to get scrolling to work all the time), it’s a very nice feature and I didn’t need to get the Bamboo Touch had I known I was going to be buying this.

Overall construction was very nice and was a key factor in choosing this over the HP DV7/DV8. The battery is very nicely built into the bottom of the machine and is fully enclosed within the shell which is a very nice design. I do hate the batteries always sticking out the back of laptops. You can see two of the four DIMM slots sticking out slightly when you take out the battery so you can add more RAM as you like (mine are all used up from putting in FOUR 2GB DDR3 RAM cards).

The weight of the Envy 15, despite its large screen was quite light and I was genuinely surprised how portable it was (after buying it, I had to carry it onto an airplane to bring it back home). I would definitely carry this around if I had to, though it’s meant to be more for use at home (and is where I will likely confine mine to).

HP is definitely aiming this at the high-end or those more into design/form as even the box comes in a super understated black outer box and an inner box which only says the word ‘ENVY’ on it in silver letters. Very nice – and another reminder/comparison to MacBooks (reminds me of the box for my Macbook Air).

My one big complaint is the screen tilt. When you open the laptop, the screen only goes back a little way – less than it seems on other laptops. The Envy prevents it from opening past about 15-20 degrees past 90 (less than I want anyways). There is a sort of rigid stop to it. When I first opened it, I almost felt as if I could have broken the screen as I opened it quickly and tried to push the screen too far beyond its threshold. This is something you’ll have to try to understand – but its something I didn’t like.

Function
As the next generation of Windows laptops, the HP Envy 15 comes with some fairly strong specs. The new Intel i7 chip, 1GB Nvidia graphic card, and 8GB of RAM are just some of the options I got. The drive, while external, is Blu-Ray (ROM only), which for me is an absolute essential (and one of the reasons I didn’t buy the Macbook Pro).

4 DIMM slots really does make this stand out and bringing it up to 8GB of RAM with the ability to go up to 16GB made this stand out. Windows 7 Professional supplied with the PC ran fairly fast and the computer just seemed ready for whatever I threw at it. I’ve only installed a few programs but I can already see that it just runs much faster at normal tasks like transferring files to and from a USB drive (which I did last night).

Other notable functions: Battery life was fairly average, I didn’t do a comprehensive test but I ran it on batteries for over an hour and had only used about 1/3rd of the battery. Not sure what having the drive external does/doesn’t do for the battery. The Envy ‘Instant On Solution’ is supposed to be able to launch certain programs without having to turn on the computer. I tried it and it seems quite capable but I’d rather just start my PC. I would have liked either a facial recognition program or a fingerprint reader in such a high-end laptop (like my Dell Laptops).

Otherwise, with the new specs, this laptop is more than capable and a nice replacement for any desktop. The most impressive aspect is the very nice screen. The 15.6” LED HD screen had a better resolution/color than even my Dell Studio XPS 16 which is also a full HD screen. Watching video files and movies on this thing is pretty outstanding. I do wish though that it were actually a bit bigger (I’m surprised there’s no ‘Envy 17’ option).

Factor
Overall, after buying the PC, I’m fairly happy. A significantly lower spec Vaio FW or HP DV7 can be had for more than 35% cheaper than what I paid for the Envy 15 which is a factor in my opinion given that I like to buy new PCs more so than most people. However, when you look at the specs in this computer, its clear that for the immediate future, this thing is more “future-proof” than the other PCs I was looking at. I doubt in the next 3-6 months that I would choose a laptop with significantly higher specs than what was in this laptop. That said, obviously, this is a fantastic PC if you have MONEY TO BURN.

Last night, I was still wondering if I should have bought that monster 18” Vaio AW instead (which had a slightly lower spec version that cost less than what I paid for the Envy 15). I don’t necessarily regret buying the Envy 15, but you are paying a premium for its design, specs, and looks – though as I mentioned, it should be more than capable for the time being. I definitely would choose this over the Adamo, but I still wonder if I should have gotten a larger screen (though that would make it a lot less portable).

theVooner@gmail.com
');

document.write('
It’s Christmas time again so this is my X’mas wishlist for 2005. There are plenty of gadgets out there to choose from and many more on the way next year, but of things available now, these are my top choices:

10) Gameboy Micro. The best gift for less than US$100 has to be the Micro. It’s no PSP, but this small toy is just plain fun to have along for those spur of the moment gaming (like waiting in airports). Ok, I’d much rather have my PSP, but everyone should already have one, and sometimes, it’s just not as fun to lug around the PSP. For me, the PSP is for trips, the Micro is for day to day. A great gift for the young ones – I know my nephew will love it.

9) Crumpler Bags. This makes my list again because they are so darn cool. Need a bag for your iPod, laptop, camera, or just for fun? The Crumpler line is simply the best for fun. I have 4 now in my collection and growing.

8) Shure E-series earphones. As noted, I forgot my earphones the other day and was glancing at the E-series Shure earphones. Yeah, I’ve got way too many kinds of earphones and headphones (everything from noise canceling to wireless), but there’s just something to these ones by Shure that makes you want one. I’m leaning towards the e3c or better yet the e3g (designed for gaming) model myself. If you don’t want to spend too much, buy the e2c, and if you want to go the best, get the e5c. Plenty of options.

7) Sharp Aquos 65” LCD TV. It’s the largest LCD available today, and it definitely will look stunning. The Pioneer 50” Plasma or the Hitachi 65" Plasma is definitely a worthy alternative for those of you that prefer Plasma (like me).

6) Sony Vaio TX. I love mini laptops and my TR was fantastic. The size and battery life made it the king of laptops and I owned it for much longer than most of my past models. But the new TX is even better. The screen is slightly larger and despite what the salesman told me about the “cropping” of images on the top and bottom, it looked pretty stunning to me. I still love the long battery life, the compact size, weight, and the design. It’s my favorite traveling laptop.

5) Oakley RazrWire. The coolest and best Bluetooth headset with a fantastic looking sunglasses from Oakley, what more could you want?

4) iPod Nano. This MP3 player is the king of the hill and a good choice given its size, design, and value-for-money. I can overlook the poor finish which is susceptible to scratching as I love using those silicon “skins” anyway. In contrast, the iPod Video is definitely a PASS, as noted in my review. The video capability is a joke (given the lack of software to encode movies) especially in Asia where we can’t even buy video iPod files, not to mention the pitiful battery life. Stick with the sexy iPod Nano.

3) Slingbox. The Slingbox is a device that lets you stream TV onto a laptop or computer anywhere. I’ve been waiting for this invention for a long time and I can’t wait to get one and try it out. The implications and use are endless. I will set one up in as many places as I can! Will I finally get TV from everywhere in the world?

2) Nokia N70. Plenty of new models and lots to choose from among mobile phones, but I think this is the best value and option for this Christmas season. It is much lighter than I though, has a fantastic screen, is dual-mode (3G/2G),and even the software is pretty good. (Ok, I cheated, this was my Christmas present to myself!) Among the Smartphones, I think the Dopod 838 is a great choice (although a bit on the big side).

1) Xbox 360. No doubt the Xbox 360 is “the” gift for this Christmas Season. It’s hard to find, got great buzz/marketing, and looks fantastic. Gameplay reviews have been mixed, but with more games on the way, there’s probably plenty of power in this. Sure the Playstation 3 might end up being better, but it’s not available now. So why wait when you can have this first for the next 4-6 months before the PS3. Despite the glitches (which isn’t so uncommon with Microsoft software) and the design “flaw”, if you can find one, get one. (I like that MS has said they would replace defective machines.)
');

So I searched around duty-free and there really wasn't anything there that was reasonably interesting. The only good headset was the Shure e2c headphones. Now these are beautiful earphones and I was certainly tempted to buy them. The only problem was that it was way overpriced for what I know they should cost, and of course, they had the catalog which had the other models. Wow! Have you seen the e5c (both for its "ability" and it price)? I wonder if it performs as well as it is supposed to. Imagine, the earphones cost more than buying a iPod Nano and the e2c! At US$499, the e5c is definitely made for high end use and probably not my PSP. Still, I'm going to look at maybe getting one of these.

theVooner@yahoo.com
');

However, at that time, I decided NOT to get one for two reasons: 1) it was grossly overpriced compared to other models in the market and 2) it didn't have all the features I wanted in a phone (3G, decent size screen, etc.). As a result, I didn't want to pay that premium for the new W800i handset. The W800 price has fallen significantly though, especially with the new W900i now out. The W900 is a swivel design Walkman phone. It updates the W800 by incorporating a larger screen, 3G capability and a built-in 470MB capacity (versus the measly 34MB on the W800). Even the color of the W900 gets a nice upgrade with two choices of white and black (though with some slight orange accents). I recently had the chance to try it out the W900 is a very nice looking and feature packed handset. Unfortunately, it was much heavier and fatter than it appears in photos. Consequently, I can't really say if it's a phone I'd recommend. It is though probably the best "music" mobile phone out there at the moment so it will appeal to some users.
