3G is pretty cool...

Sorry I haven't been writing. I've just been SOOOO busy at work. Anyway, I finally got my 3G handset up and running after some initial glitches. Let me just say, so far, it's been pretty awesome. There's so much to tell. I'll just have to be quick and do a review!

3G is finally here...

I'm pretty excited. Tomorrow is the official launch of 3G in Hong Kong. Despite all the pessimism and nay-sayers, I'm a believer. I'll also be one of the first adopters. I'm signed up and ready to go and sometime tomorrow, I should be receiving my new handsets. The NEC handset that will be available, the c616 is a 2nd generation W-CDMA handset. I hope it has fixed many of the past glitches. I'm curious to see how voice quality will be. We'll let you know...

Sony Vaio TR3 here!

Well, the holidays are over and I am stuffed. Had lots of fun eating but taking and reviewing lots of photos. Oh how I wish I had a DVD writer to store all these photos. Well that's what I wanted sometime back when the TR2 came out. Of course I didn't bother to wait for a DVD writer and bought the TR2. Well Sony seems to have heard the call. The TR3 was just released in Japan. The main highlight of the upgrade seems to be the addition of a DVD writer. Yeah! Too bad it's too late for me. I'll wait for the next incarnation of the TR series.

Happy New Year of the Monkey! New review

Happy New Year to everyone. Yes, its the Chinese New Year over here so we get a bit of a holiday. That will give me plenty of time to catch up on reviews. But here's one to hold you over. My very awesome PDA/phone, the Sony Ericsson P900. I love it!

Sony Airboard LF-X1

Sony introduced the Airboard in Japan sometime back. Basically it's a tablet screen that wirelessly can be moved around a house or office. It receives TV, Internet, and can connect to do some other basic functions. It allows you to have mutlimedia access without a PC. I guess, it's sort of a first generation Tablet PC minus the operating system. Well, a new update is the way in the form of the LF-X1. It looks rather similar except for a few cosmetic upgrades. An intersting device because one day, we could all have these type of convergent devices to carry around.

Modern day walkie talkies -- Motorola Talkabouts

I'm about to embark on a long vacation and thought that I should bring my old Motorola Talkabouts with me. Out of curiousity, I looked at the Motorola website to see what new models they have. They have lots. Many aren't very attractive and I'm puzzled why some of the better looking models seem to have disappered for the static, boring ones. Having said that though, I've noticed a very nice improvement in technology -- the use of GMRS. GMRS is another frequency which allows for a longer range. Perfect -- I have always been bothered by the lack of range of the Talkabouts. However, the bad news for US users is that use of the GMRS frequency requires a license. So that has detered many users. Luckily I don't have that issue being outside of the US.

One other big problem users in the US face is that with the price of these walkie-talkies continuing to fall, everyone can pretty much afford them. That means lots of people have them and its highly likely that in places when you want them, the frequencies could be clouded with too many users. I wonder what a day in Disneyland is like?

Sony Hi-MD

In sticking with MD, Sony has introduced a few new models that incorporate a new Hi-MD standard. The MZ-NH600D is a Net MD player that uses the new ATRAC3plus codec. That means the MD can record 45 hours of music. Pretty impressive. But I already have two MD players collecting dust -- it's unlikely that I'll be picking up another one.

Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 6

Yeah, I bought a new Plasma TV for my bedroom. I was tempted by the LCD options but for me, plasma was the way to go. But, if you have silly money to play around, then the B&O BV6 is the way to go. It's a rather simple 22" LCD, but backed by Bang & Olufsen's spectacular design. It's what you get when you don't have anything better to do with your money.

Apple iPod Mini or as I like to call it... Minipod.

Yeah, I couldn't go on here without mentioning the very cute Apple iPod Mini. Don't think I need to say too much about this beauty. It's small (I like), reasonably priced (I like that more), and looks like the ideal gadget. So will theVooner finally get an iPod... hmm....

Carrozeria...

Car-ro-what?? One of the downsides of living in Asia is that you do sort of miss driving. Ok, I don't miss the LA rush hour jams, the 3 hours snail driving to go 10 miles, or the mad drivers on the freeway, but I do miss some of it. I've had my car for over a year and a half and have only put on 5500km or just about 3400 miles on it. I'm lucky if I use the car once a week (to the golf course and back)!

Well, if I were in the US, I know I would definitely get a cool car, but make the interior even cooler. The Carrozzeria is Pioneer's lineup of AV systems for the car. There's everything you could want from subwoofers to amazing DVD and GPS. It's all here. All I can say is that theVooner's car would be a pretty fun entertainment/gadget mobile.

New year, new toys...

Well 2004 has started out pretty fun. I did spoil myself and buy quite a lot of new things. I'll get into that a bit later. So what's next. Well my primary laptop is pushing my patience as it starts to slowdown. It's been about a year now if I remember so for me, that's about the right turn to churn (yeah, I'm crazy)! So what is there out there? Well the last few times, I bought a Dell. I just like the customization option -- from picking your screen, to the graphics card. But there's lots of competition and don't I know it. The HP and Toshiba 17" laptops are simply stunning. I just wish they had better screens. Japanese makers like NEC, Fujitsu and even Sharp have cool looking models. Then there's always the Sony Vaios. What to do? We'll surf the net when we have time and sooner or later... there will likely be a new laptop for theVooner!
