Karl G. Siewert, MLIS

I can't believe that this is still one of the top results for "yoyology" on google. As you can see, this blog is moribund. If you are interested in finding out more about me, try http://www.yoyology.net or my current blog.

Recent notice for a moribund page.

Well, since Jenny Levine linked to this page in her item on memepool at The Shifted Librarian, I figure it had better have a more recent post than last August!

Welcome, all! As you can see, I don't post on this page much any more, as I've been focusing more on my reading list (currently in flux from danchan to Blogspot with a possible detour through allconsuming) and posting on LISNews and, as mentioned, memepool (may not be suitable for all audiences).

I do have a more standard homepage, a Geocities vanity plate accessible as www.yoyology.com. If, after all that, you are still wondering about me, drop me a note!

It's been awhile

Well, as I think I've mentioned, regular journaling has never been my strong suit, so I haven't been posting much in here.

However, I have never been able to stop myself from reading and talking about books, so one of my other weblogs, under the name Readerman, is going like a wildfire. I post there nearly every day about a book that I have read.

I'd like to ask that you check it out. Don't stop coming here, though. Who knows when I might have a nugget of wisdom that just has to come out!

Ah, the memories!

I just did something I've not done in years. I proofread a paper.

An eighth grade boy just came up to the desk with a paper he wrote about a trip to a local museum. He asked me to "correct" it for him, and I spent a few minutes marking it up with a handy red Flair and suggesting some changes to make it better.

It really felt good to do that for somebody again. The funny thing is, I had just finished doing something similar. One of the other users on Linkfilter was getting ready to send an article off to an online music magazine, and he asked for proofreaders, so I did that for him.

Funny how things come back around. I taught high school English for three years, and when I left, I thought those skills would go on the shelf, but everything useful gets used eventually.

Jiggity Jog

We drove home last night in some of the nastiest weather I've seen. The storm started just as we left Topeka and we stayed in the leading edge of the system all the way down. In Independence, Kansas, it looked like we had managed to outrun it, but I had to make a pit stop and by the time I got back to the car it was bucketing down again.

I got so tired of it. It was scary in places, so I had to slow way down, but what really bothered me was the isolation. With that much rain, there was no visibility, so the only thing letting me know we were still on Earth was the faint ghosts of the lines on the road.

Topeka

I just had a really great time with some friends here in Topeka. We took the kids to the pool this afternoon, and then tonight we stayed up and played Cranium and Balderdash until 1:00.

I know, it sounds pretty tame, but these are friends I haven't seen in a long time, and hanging out with them for hours on end with no obligations or worries has been really rewarding. I laughed harder tonight than I have in many months.

Success!

Well, hey, so far this is good. The page is still up, and if you can read this, the posting system works. So far I am impressed with danchan.

I've Moved!

Since blogger/blogspot are having some kind of ongoing problem, I've decided to move my blog here. The following is the extent of what I had published (and attempted to publish) up until now:

I hope somebody can see this at some point. blogspot is having some kind of trouble, and I keep getting an error every time I try to publish. If this keeps up, I'll be looking for another provider.

Well, I haven't posted in a while, for a number of reasons. The last several days I was too focused on getting things ready for Kim's surprise birthday party. I was sort of afraid that, if I posted on here, Kim would choose that day to check out my blog for the first time.

Anyway, Kim turned 30 on Saturday, so I got as many guests as I could to come down and visit. From the beginning, it was a lost cause trying to keep everything quiet. For one thing, some people were going to be staying with us. In the end, we had 21 people, and about 8 of them were a total surprise.

This Wednesday will be Kim's first day at the new job. She's very excited, but also frustrated by having to continue to deal with things at Super Target until then. I think the new job will be really good for her.

KIMMIE GOT A NEW JOB!!!!

She found out yesterday. She'll be doing payroll for a big company with offices on the 35th floor downtown. Very impressive. This is great in so many ways. She'll have regular hours, the pay is much better, the benefits will be better. Most importantly, she'll be doing the work she is trained and qualified to do, not answering phones and folding clothes in the fitting room. Congratulations, Kim! I love you!

I have to say, if I am required to work on an evening (and I expect I will for the rest of my career in public libraries), Monday is a good day for it. I'm much happier doing it this way than if I had to work Monday mornings and Wednesday nights. That being said, I do get awfully listless about this time in the evening. Coffee is a necessity.

I feel really spacey today. It's like I have a headache that doesn't hurt, if that makes any sense. I'm supposed to meet Kim and her mom and the kids at Garden Ridge after work, but I don't know if I can handle wandering around for an hour in that place. I really need to get some sleep tonight. Maybe I'll be able to sleep in tomorrow morning.

Last night was really great. After I picked up Xander from daycare, we met Kim at Super Target, did our grocery shopping, and made it home in time to have a real dinner! At the dining room table! All three of us!

Of course, Xander had cereal while Kim and I had pasta, but that's not much of a surprise. It was just wonderful to be all together. Once Kim gets a new job, we should be able to do this more often. We'll have every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evening, plus every other Tuesday.

Today is shaping up to be busy at the library. B'Looney the Pirate is doing a couple of kids' programs, so there are children everywhere! I hope they're signing up for the Summer Reading Program.

Let's see. I could list some of my favorite websites:
memepool - wwweirdness
LISNews - Everything interesting going on in the world of librarians like me.
goats: the online comic strip - Deeply hilarious. Parental guidance insisted upon.
Ken's World on a String - My preferred destination for yo-yo info

Well, just like everybody and their Ensign, I've decided to try this blogging thing. No real thoughts right now (are there ever?), but I'm posting anyway!
